"Hidden Wonderland.
Slam. Stomping on the stairs. Glass shattering. Heavy footsteps. WILLOW! her name hurled like poison. Willow wedges herself into the corner behind her mattress. Outside, her mother pounds on the door. Continuous shatters in the hall. An eerie silence lingers for a moment. Her mother strikes. The door gives in. She thrusts herself through the shattered door and her eyes settle in the corner. Willow braces herself.
You stupid bitch its all your fault! Its always been your fault! her face burns with fire, her arm extends. The sting from the blow across Willows face is normal. She grasps her swollen cheek and lets her body collapse. Numb tears begin to run. The fiery monster shakes with satisfaction and a toothy grin spreads across her face. She spits. Willow looks away as she parades out.
Willow counts to ten. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. The car wheels howl in the driveway and she knows the beast is gone.
She pulls herself together and goes to check the damage. Her door is completely destroyed; all of the family photos lay on the floor covered in shattered glass. A hurricane would have done less.
Down the shredded stairs, she hears a faint sound. She turns into the kitchen to find her father on the floor with empty vodka bottles. She steps over him and reaches towards the fridge. A figure in the stainless steel glares at Willow. Her tangled blonde hair could house a family of mice, her tear stained eyes lie, and a red salty liquid drips down her nose, along her lip, and on to the floor. She slams her hand into the fridge, hoping the image will vanish. It never will.
Silent tears flood her face. Her stomach churns at her pathetic father and she runs to the bathroom, not looking back. Her mother smashed all the mirrors in the house six months ago, Thank God. She whispers. She stands over the sink with clenched fists and releases all of her pain. She smashes her body into the walls and screams until her voice is gone. She collapses, grasping for breath. Stupid bitch, pathetic nobody, Goddamn useless family. She mumbles to herself panting. The life drains from her body as she drifts unconscious.
Slam. Her eyes snap open and her fingers run along the cold floor. Where am I? she comes back to reality. She scrambles to her room before her mother can catch her. The air feels slimy, she is here.
Willows lucky; she beat her mother to her room.
She leans against her closed door and sighs. The empty white walls with a mattress pushed into the corner haunt her in her sleep. This sad prison.
Slowly, she walks to her mattress and curls up. Willow has insomnia. Part of the reason for her insomnia is her wondering mind. She thinks too much about what would be, what could be, and what will never be. She also grazes over the daydreams of what would happen if she left, if she snuck out when the mad woman was asleep and the drunk had been laid to rest.
She slipped out of the front door when even the mice were asleep. She moved in slow motion on the tips of her toes. As soon as the door was closed and the nip of night air ran along her skin, she was gone. She took off sprinting, the faster she ran the wider her smile grew. She began to slow, her heart couldnt take it.
The dark veil restricting her happiness had been lifted. Nothing ever felt so good. The nighttime felt like a parallel universe to Willow, she was at ease.
There was grass to her right, so she laid on her back and studied the stars. They were hard to see, but she squinted to block out the world, and in some spots you could see diamonds in the sky.
Willow could almost hear her heart sigh as she realized that this was it. She began to walk. She didnt know where she was going or why, but she went. Her body moved like a dance, each step and movement gliding together. She could feel the serenity around her as she continued to lead with her heart.
Her body paused, she looked around. Her jaw dropped and she fell to her knees, Oh thank you. The words stumbled off her lips as her eyes flew across the land in front of her while her ears hummed with excitement. This place was surreal.
The most beautiful thing she had ever experienced. She was directly in front of a creek. She could hear tiny streams of water giggle as it ran upon rocks and water plants. The trees welcomed her with waves as the wind began to pick up and the little path was lit with fireflies to guide her.
Her steps were precise as she followed the trail. Her mind was buzzing. The trail continued for five minutes or so, until she reached the end of the creek. Where had this lead her, to a dead end?
Willow climbed over the jungle of plants and stood motionless. The water was stunning; it flowed from a sprig across from her and moved all the way down the creek where she couldnt see. The tiny pebbles the water skid upon glistened in the moonlight. Each pebble was related, she could tell from their features. The trees formed above her head into a tall arch and smiled at her as she smiled back. Heaven. She thought out loud.
She sat down on the beautiful pebble beach and let every ounce of negativity run away. Willow was peaceful. She gently picked up one of the sister rocks and cradled it in her palms. The sister shone and began to whisper to Willow.
Oh you dont know what its like. Willow began to tell her. The sister sat nervously in Willows hands and let her spill out her soul. The perfect sister knew exactly when to feel apologetic and comforting. Willow embraced her whole body in a hug.
The sun began to lighten ever so slightly and her heart was set into a panic. Willow kissed her friends good-bye and ran. The sun would not beat her. She wouldnt allow it. She ran harder, every part of her body sparkled with sweat beads. And as she ran for her life, the bright sun birthed from the darkness behind her."
